Maccabi Haifa defeated Sheriff Tiraspol in dramatic manner to advance to the third round of the UEFA Champions League qualification. The final score was 4-1 (4-2 on aggregate). The Greens fell behind the Moldovan team early on, but late in normal time, goals from Tjaron Chery and Mahmoud Jaber helped them claw their way back and force overtime.
However, immediately before the extra session began, Sheriff lost two players to red cards, which greatly aided Messay Dego as Haifa scored twice more through Dean David and Erik Shuranov to secure the victory. The Israeli team will play Slovan Bratislava next in an effort to advance to the Playoff Round and return to the group stages of Europe's top competition for the second consecutive year. Haifa is still assured of participating in the group stages of either the Conference League or the Europa League should it not go beyond Bratislava in the forthcoming match.
