Arsenal thrashed Manchester United 3-1

At the Emirates, Marcus Rashford gave the visitors the lead against the flow of play, but skipper Martin Odegaard of Arsenal levelled shortly after. After a VAR review, a second-half penalty awarded to the host team was reversed, and United was denied what may have been a late winner when replacement Alejandro Garnacho was determined to be offside. In the eight minutes of extra time, the Premier League runners-up from last season maintained the pressure.

They were rewarded in the 96th minute when substitute Jonny Evans deflected new midfielder Rice's effort past Andre Onana after Rice handled a deep corner at the back post. While there was still time for another goal, replacement Jesus raced forward and beat Onana, shocking United. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told Sky that his team "works and does everything we do every day for moments like this" and praised them for their "never-say-die" mentality.
