Aston Villa holds back Juventus at home

The 0-0 Champions League tie with Juventus, according to Aston Villa defender Matty Cash, was a "building block" in their attempt to go back to their best. The Villa Park stalemate was the ninth game without a victory, easily the longest run in Unai Emery's tenure. Villa's early-season optimism has been dashed in recent weeks.

However, their performance against the Italian powerhouses was far superior, and they may have won if Morgan Rogers' controversially disallowed injury-time goal hadn't been disallowed. If Rogers' last goal had been allowed to stand, it would have been another historic evening at Villa Park. However, referee Jesus Gil Manzano concluded that Diego Carlos had fouled Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, and the goal was disallowed. But despite the draw Cash states “But tonight was a building block, a clean sheet, a better performance and hopefully we can take that on to the weekend.
