After defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Atletico Madrid took a step closer to making it back to the Champions League semifinals. With goals from Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino in the first half, Atletico dominated Dortmund for the most of the game. However, a late goal from substitute Sébastien Haller kept the German club in the game.
In the dying minutes, Dortmund twice struck the woodwork in a danger. Germany will host the second leg on Tuesday of next week. Since their defeat by city rival Real Madrid in 2017, Atletico has not advanced to the round of four. In the past six quarterfinals, the Spanish team has triumphed three times. Atletico Madrid had just four minutes to grab the lead at the Metropolitano Stadium. De Paul capitalized on a blunder by the Dortmund defense, stealing the ball and finishing inside the box.
