Atletico Madrid defeated Celta Vigo 1-0 in a thrilling match on Thursday, thanks to a late goal from Julian Alvarez, moving them up to third place in La Liga. Atletico were destined for a second straight draw, but the 90th minute substitution made sure they went back to Madrid with all three points.
Just before halftime, Celta's first home loss of the season came from a crucial stop made by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who denied Iago Aspas at his near post. Despite a subpar performance, he managed to keep his team in it and twice after the break kept out Borja Iglesias, who was struggling to find his clinical edge for Celta. But in the closing seconds, Alvarez, the high-profile addition, scored his second goal of the year by extending his leg to meet Antonie Griezmann's precise cross and beating Vicente Guaita.
