Atletico Madrid thrashed Real Madrid 3-1

When former Real striker Morata converted a risky cross from Samuel Lino, they took the lead inside of four minutes. With another header, Antoine Griezmann made it 2-0 before Toni Kroos' beautiful low shot cut the lead in half. However, Morata's incredible leap to meet Saul Niguez's cross after the interval gave Atletico the win.

With the win, Atletico rose to fifth place in the standings, while Real dropped to third for the first time this year, behind leaders Barcelona and Girona. Before this game, Atletico had only triumphed only one of their previous 14 La Liga Madrid derbies, but they startled their fierce rivals with two goals in the opening 18 minutes, and they then defended staunchly the rest of the way. Jude Bellingham, who has been on fire since joining Real in the summer, seemed unhappy the entire time, which culminated in him receiving a yellow card for a sloppy challenge on Angel Correa in stoppage time.
