December signing This weekend, Diego Simeone's team maintained their top-four position thanks to a goal from Memphis Depay, who had just joined Los Rojiblancos, who had come off the bench. After the break, Atletico tried to pick up the pace, but Alvaro Morata was well denied as neither team managed to generate any significant opportunity. As Jan Oblak made two key saves and Stefan Savic was sent for a professional foul, Atletico were destined to lose the game in the dying moments.

Depay entered the game as a substitute and pounced on a loose ball inside the Celta area to turn and score the game-winning goal just as it appeared like the match might end in a goalless draw. Next up for Atletico Madrid is a match versus Athletic Club at home the following weekend, while Celta will be travelling to Real Sociedad.
