Centre-back Araujo, who had been substituted with eight minutes left to play up front, ended Barcelona's two-game losing streak and set up frenzied celebrations in the 92nd minute by steering in a pass across goal from Frenkie de Jong. At the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Pedri gave the home team the lead with a low shot from the side of the pitch that bounced off a post.

However, after a corner, Axel Witsel's incredible overhead kick put Girona level against the flow of play. Marcus Rashford, who had a free kick strike the bar in the first half, was primarily responsible for Barcelona's several chances to reclaim the advantage. The Manchester United loanee also had a glorious chance in the second half but could only turn a low cross wide of the target from a few yards out.
