Barcelona and Girona held on a draw in LaLiga

The Balugrana controlled play but was unable to score the game-winning goal, missing multiple opportunities in the process. Xavi Hernandez's squad put on another lacklustre display in their opening match after being humiliated by Madrid in the Copa del Rey, failing to penetrate a defence that has only managed one other clean sheet this year.

Ronald Arajo had the finest chance for them in the opening period, but Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga cleared the ball off the line. As Barcelona plodded through the game, Raphinha and Eric Garcia were equally culpable of blowing golden opportunities for the home team. In the second half, Girona's perseverance almost paid off when Valentin Castellanos found himself one on one with Marc-Andre ter Stegen but missed the target despite having teammate Viktor Tsygankov open for a simple tap-in finish.
