Beccacece becomes latest World Cup casualty

Sebastián Beccacece confirmed he is stepping down as Ecuador manager following the 2-0 defeat to Mexico that sealed ‘La Tri’s’ elimination from the World Cup. He said the team had failed to meet the target of achieving the nation’s best-ever tournament performance, noting that his contract naturally concluded with the end of Ecuador’s campaign.

Beccacece reflected on inheriting a side with “no clear path” but insisted Ecuador had progressed compared to their previous World Cup showing. He described the day as sombre for Ecuadorian fans, who had been fuelled by hope after the historic win over Germany that carried the team into the Round of 32. Despite wishing he could continue, he praised the “extraordinary brotherhood” within the squad and thanked his “group of warriors” for their dedication, respect, and commitment, stressing he had no reproaches for anyone.
