Almost 22 years after their AFCON debut against South Africa on 27 January 2004, the breakthrough moment arrived on 27 December 2025. A single first-half strike was enough to write a new chapter in the history of the Cheetahs.
That decisive goal came from Yohan Roche, who found the net before the interval to deliver a landmark triumph. The defender, who plays his club football with Petrolul Ploiesti, instantly secured his place in Beninese football folklore.
Botswana attempted to respond and came agonisingly close just before half-time, when Mothusi Johnson unleashed a powerful effort that crashed against the woodwork. However, clear chances were scarce thereafter as Benin defended resolutely.
In the end, the historic win stood firm. While the Zebras remain in search of their own first AFCON victory, Benin now look well placed to progress to the knockout stages, either as group runners-up or among the best third-placed teams.
