Benzema and Morata save Zidane's lead

After the victories other big clubs in Spain delivered, Real Madrid was in dire need to get a new victory in order to stay on top of the table. They just came from winning against modest Polish club Legia in the Champions League, but this Sunday's match against Athletic was a whole different kind fo challenge. Still without Casemiro and Modric, Zidane has managed to salvage results in the past couple of games without being that dominating club people expect.

His approach included Mateo Kovacic, Toni Kroos and Isco in midfield, something that seemed to work well from the very start. The Spaniard got to assist Benzema early in the game and the fans suddenly started feeling relief, but they didn't know the sheer suffering they were about to endure against a brave Athletic Club that was all out for the three points at the Bernabeu. Sebin filled the match with suspense with an equalizer in the 28th minute, this took the focus out of Zidane's pupils.

The second half was an even worse experience for Los Blancos, they didn't seem to find the back of the net. Cristiano Ronaldo was frustrated because he still hasn't scored too many goals as he usually does at this stage of the tournament, but there was a man who was finally able to become his club's savior. A cross from Bale found Alvaro Morata near the end of the match, at first touch, the striker wasn't able to get the ball in. But fortune allowed him to score on a second attempt after the ball hit the goalkeeper's back, this was exactly what Real needed. Ronaldo had a great chance at the very end, but he sent his shot straight to the goalkeeper.
