If Spezia wins this weekend's match against Lecce, Cremonese will mathematically be relegated together with Sampdoria. The hosts, who were in penultimate position and six points behind both Verona and Spezia, were running out of time to prevent relegation. While Bologna was without Roberto Soriano, Georgios Kyriakopoulos, and Adama Soumaoro, and had Stefan Posch returned from his suspension, Cyriel Dessers is out for the remainder of the season.

Despite keeping Milan, Juventus, and Roma to draws during that stretch, Thiago Motta's team had gone six games without a victory. When Musa Barrow seemed to try a curler from the outside of the box to the far top corner, it appeared to be heading wide until Marko Arnautovic diverted it with a header. A Riccardo Orsolini corner caused two ricochets off Lewis Ferguson and Soualiho Meite, and the Scottish midfielder swiftly reacted to shoot in from six yards as Bologna scored a second.
