Michael Carrick has admitted he cannot say whether Matthijs de Ligt will feature again this season, as the Manchester United defender continues to battle a stubborn back injury. De Ligt has been sidelined since November 30 against Crystal Palace, and his recovery has progressed far slower than the club initially hoped.
Carrick explained that the centre‑back is working to return, but the nature of the issue has made the process unpredictable. He noted that back problems can appear resolved before flaring up again, making it impossible to set a timeline. United, currently third and pushing for Champions League qualification, will continue to monitor his condition while remaining patient.
The uncertainty also casts doubt on De Ligt’s availability for the Netherlands ahead of the World Cup, prompting speculation about whether surgery might be required. Carrick declined to discuss that possibility, saying the club will simply do whatever is necessary to support the defender’s recovery.
