In what can arguably be defined as the best Copa America match so far in the tournament, Chile and Panama clashed for a spot in the quarterfinals. After winning with a controversial call from the referee against Bolivia, Chile needed to perform really well tonight in order to clear any doubts about their game level and potential. This Chile generation needed a day of reckoning which could give them back the lost credibility of past games, manager Pizzi threw all his cards on the table and made the gamble.
The match between Chile and Panama started with a wild first fifteen minutes. Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo made a terrible mistake, after Camargo sent an apparently easy long distance shot that hit the ground before getting to the Barcelona goalkeeper and then got inside the net. But the sweet after taste would last them until the 15th minute, as Vargas pushed a ball inside after the Panama goalkeeper deflected a shot by Alexis Sanchez. But this overly exciting match was just getting started. Two minutes before half time, Vargas would get his brace after lifting in the air and scoring a well placed header right to the bottom corner.
The second half would get incredibly exhilarating, five minutes after the break it was Alexis Sanchez who scored a beautiful volley for Chile's third goal. This was the first time in the tournament, that a team turned a game around after allowing the first goal of the game. But being the best match of the Copa America Centenario, Panama wasn't going to go home without putting up a fight. Fifteen minutes from the end during a set piece for Panama, Abdiel Arroyo's header pulled one back for his side and gave this match even more suspense.
Alexis would finish off Panama for good on the last minute with a beautiful header after getting a cross from the left flank, Sanchez got a brace just like Vargas and got back that lost credibility we talked about early in this match report. At the end Chile was able to get that victory and six points that left them in second place of Group D, regardless of how Messi and company do against Bolivia.
