Shafiu Mumuni crushed any faint hopes from the Phobians to salvage a point when he slammed home Ashgold’s third and winner infront of a frustrated looking Hearts fans.
Goals: Hearts - Joseph Esso 75”
Ashold - James Akaminko 9”, Amos Addai 60”, Shafiu Mumuni 89”
CK Akunnor’s men continued where they left off against Hearts when they once again saw off the Phobians in an effective and brilliant performance.
The Miners had won this fixture for 2 years running and were in confident mood ahead of the clash. Akunnor himself a former coach of Hearts of Oak has always beaten his former employers since he left.
The Phobians playing their first home game at their adopted home Cape Coast needed to start well and give fans glimpses of what to expect during their home games this season.
Coach Wellington started went in with an attacking line up with Cosmos Dauda and Joseph Esso leading the line with support from entertainer Winful Cobbinah.
Ashgold’s early pressure and persistence yielded results in the 9th minute. The Phobians failed to deal with a corner as James Akaminko reacted quickest to poke the ball into the net from a goal-mouth scramble.
Hearts found it difficult to penetrate through the middle with little space being given them by the visitors.
The Miners kept it tight and compact reducing the Phobians to just passing the ball around without any real threat till the first half ended.
Hearts of Oak came out spirited in the second half showing hunger and desire to restore parity but failed to transform their dominance in terms of possession into goals.
The home side was struck a huge blow on the hour mark. Amos Addai received the ball on the left wing, dribble past two Hearts defenders before making mockery of Gbeti in goal to make it 2-0 to Ashgold.
A disjointed looking Hearts of Oak bench had to react quickly, on came Isaac Mensah and Selasi for Hokemba and Cobbinah who had a very quiet game by his standards.
The changes got the Phobians in the groove, resulting in them halving the deficit in the 75th minute through Josephine Esso. The local lad and former Ebusua Dwarfs striker was too powerful for his marker turning delightfully on the edge of the box before rifling into the top corner leaving veteran George Owu with no chance at all.
The Phobians sensed they could snatch something from the game and staged late onslaught but again they were wasteful infront of goal with captain Fatawu Mohamed guilty of poor crosses on several occasions.
Ashgold, however, had the final say late in the game. Tijani Joshua stole the ball off Joshua Otoo and sent in a teasing cross for Shafiu to head home the match winner in the 2nd minute of extra time.
CK Akunnor’s men ensured they continued their fine run of form against the Phobians away from home and leaving them with just a point after 2 games.
