Champions Napoli were defeated 1-0 at home by Empoli midfielder Viktor Kovalenko in a dramatic late goal on Sunday, denying them the opportunity to climb to third place in the rankings. In stoppage time, Kovalenko, a Ukrainian, scored the game-winning goal from within the box after the ball rebounded in off the far post.
Giovanni Simeone gave Napoli, who were still without injured striker Victor Osimhen, the lead in the 27th minute, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Napoli is now in fourth place in the Champions League with 21 points, two behind AC Milan (who were beaten to a 2-2 draw at Lecce on Saturday) and eight behind leaders Juventus after their disastrous 1-1 draw at Union Berlin on Wednesday. Later on Sunday, midtable Frosinone will play host to second-place Inter Milan, with 28 points.
