Euro2024: Gibraltar player is oldest ever in qualifying

Gibraltar international Lee Casciaro on Friday became the oldest player ever to take part in a UEFA European Championship qualifying match, breaking a record set four decades ago by Italian Dino Zoff.

At Estádio Algarve, where the Gibraltarians play as hosts during the qualifying phase for Euro2024, the Lincoln Red Imps striker started in the defeat against Greece (0-3), in the first round of Group B, and established a new maximum, at 41 years and 176 days old.

Casciaro, who has played 54 games and scored three goals for the Gibraltar national team, thus surpassed the record of a 'legend' of world football, former goalkeeper Dino Zoff, who was 41 years and 90 days old when he played the last match of the career for the Italy national team, in May 1983, against Sweden, in the 'race' to Euro1984.
