As we have already analyzed this in past articles, Louis Van Gaal's main talent is to spot great young players and turn them into world class professionals. He was the main responsible for the debut of amazing players like Patrick Kluivert, Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf at Ajax; Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and David Alaba for Bayern Munich and perhaps his greatest achievement so far: the debuts of Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta for FC Barcelona.
After being sacked from United, Van Gaal's greatest achievement had a lot to do with this eye for talent that he has which is undeniable. The debut of Marcus Rashford is perhaps the most exciting of all the bunch, but under him up to 14 young United players have debuted. To former United centre back Rio Ferdinand, this is what Van Gaal did best with the Red Devils, his legacy.
Writing on his official Facebook page, Rio said: "Van Gaal's unwavering belief in his methods is something to respect in many ways, but it was also part of his undoing. Success (winning the league or Champions League) is what Manchester United demands, and added to that an attacking, quick, aggressive and imaginative style of football.
"Unfortunately Van Gaal failed to bring either of those elements to the club. He is huge personality who won an FA cup, keeping up his habit of winning trophies everywhere he has been, but his Manchester United legacy will be the introduction of the players from the academy like Rashford, Lingard, Fosu-Mensah and so on. Giving kids and opportunity to play was in keeping with the history of the club."
