FIFA has imposed disciplinary sanctions on Egypt following the team’s heated World Cup round-of-16 defeat against Argentina, with head coach Hossam Hassan and several players facing suspensions.
Argentina advanced with a dramatic 3-2 victory on July 7, 2026, recovering from a two-goal deficit against Mohamed Salah’s side. However, the match was overshadowed by controversy after Mostafa Ziko had a goal disallowed following a disputed foul involving Lisandro Martínez.
Egypt’s frustration intensified after the final whistle. Hassan accused officials of treating Argentina favourably, questioning the fairness of the refereeing. Ziko also voiced his anger, alleging that the tournament was rigged.
FIFA subsequently handed Ziko a five-match suspension. Hassan received a three-match ban alongside his brother Ibrahim, who is also part of Egypt’s coaching setup. The Egyptian coach was additionally fined $20,000.
The sanctions add another chapter to an already contentious World Cup encounter.
