For Portugal, being finally able to win a title on the international level trumps any frustration they've had in the past. From that infamous night in Portugal back in 2004, to those two semifinals lost in 2000 and 2006, all the way to the times of Eusebio: the Black Panther from Mozambique who wasn't able to bring international joy to his country. Last Sunday all that history could finally close a circle with a victory worthy of a Hollywood movie.
The stage was set for them to make history alongside their most valuable player in history, it was time for Ronaldo to take the stage and put the names of Figo and Eusebio way up high by honoring their previous efforts with a title. However, destiny had other plans for the star as he suffered from the sidelines due to a cursed knee injury. But like the Spartan army from the movie 300, the rest of the players believed they could do great things even without their main commander.
Portuguese player Fonte described it as such to Record and talked about the drama they went through as they lost their best player early during the first half: "It's something that was written. It could be a movie. We must thank the Portuguese, believing and giving us the energy we needed. Without them it would not have been possible. When you lose the best, it's not easy, but we showed a very large belief, a huge spirit. We suffered as the Portuguese suffer forever, but always sought the goal. They had opportunities, but we are the winners. It is unforgettable."
