With only one victory from their first six league games, Jose Mourinho's team is currently 16th in the standings with five points. Roma felt they had things under control after defeating Empoli 7-0 in the middle of September, but after that came a 1-1 draw at Torino and the humiliating loss on Thursday at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Genoa's victory became the team's first at home this year.

Before Mateo Retegui, with his fifth goal of the year, Morten Thorsby, and Junior Messias defeated the capital club, Albert Gudmundsson and Bryan Cristante had given the home team the lead. Despite dominating Frosinone, Fiorentina was punished for their carelessness with a 1-1 tie. When Nicolas Ivan Gonzalez put his team in ahead in the 19th minute, it appeared as though Fiorentina would move over Juventus and into a tie for third place with a victory.
