Savio, a Brazilian winger, scored two goals in five minutes as a surprise package. Girona defeated Rayo Vallecano 3-0 to take back the top spot in the La Liga standings. With twelve rounds remaining in the season, Savio enabled the Catalans to pass Barcelona and close the gap to leaders Real Madrid to just six points. Girona coach Michel said, "After three games without a win, the team needed to win. There is still a lot of work to be done." "It was a challenging day. "What we witnessed on the field was more even; the 3-0 score is not what happened," he continued.

After Pep Chavarria was sent off with fifteen minutes remaining, Rayo is still seven points above the relegation zone in the first division of Spain. After 52 minutes, Ukraine's Viktor Tsygankov, a winger, scored the first goal with a deft side-footed finish.
