Girona defeated Mallorca 5-3 on Saturday to take the lead in the Spanish league. The overnight leader Real Madrid, who will be visiting Atletico Madrid on Sunday, has been passed by Girona by one point. If Barcelona defeats Celta Vigo at home later on Saturday, it will catch up to Girona. Girona has emerged as the surprise of the season thus far under coach Míchel Sánchez. Since a tie with Real Sociedad in the season opener, the tiny team from Catalonia in northeastern Spain has won five straight games.

Vedat Muriqi's successful penalty kick in the fourth minute gave Mallorca the lead right away. With goals from David Lopez, Artem Dovbyk, Iván Martn, Yangel Herrera, and Sávio, Girona stormed back, but Mallorca's replacement Ábdon Prats cut the gap with a late brace.
