Girona snatched a remarkable 4-3 victory over Atletico Madrid

Ivan Martin's goal in stoppage time after Madrid defeated Real Mallorca 1-0 made sure Carlo Ancelotti's team had 48 points from 19 games. At Girona's modest Montilivi stadium, Alvaro Morata scored a hat-trick for Atletico, but it was insufficient as Martin found the top corner with a late goal to keep Girona in the running for the championship. Third-place Atletico Madrid and fourth-place champion Barcelona, who go to Las Palmas on Thursday, are both behind Los Blancos and Girona by ten points.

In an exciting first half, Morata scored twice for Atletico, while Valery Fernandez, Savinho, and Daley Blind scored goals for the hosts. The Spain international tied the score early in the second half with his hat trick, but Martin's last-minute heroics gave Girona the victory in a thrilling match. In just their fourth season at the top division, Girona had a chance to grab the lead as soon as the game started.
