After a crushing loss to Werder Bremen on the last day of 2024–2025, Heidenheim's relegation play-off spot was confirmed. The game started off at a fast pace, which Bremen finally proved they could handle. Romano Schmid took the penalty after Marco Grüll was hauled down in the box in the fourteenth minute. The Austrian midfielder remained composed and gave Bremen a 1-0 lead by sending Kevin Müller the wrong way.
A precise corner kick from Marvin Ducksch found Jens Stage in the far post. He got to the top and doubled their advantage by hitting a header past Müller. Bremen's defense held firm as Heidenheim found it difficult to generate clear-cut opportunities. Bremen persevered and scored once more in the 66th minute. Mitchell Weiser sent the ball to Ducksch, who had been crucial all game, and he hit a strong effort from beyond the box to give Bremen the victory.
