Sabah’s first‑ever Champions League match produced a landmark moment in European football, as the Azerbaijani club fielded a starting XI featuring eleven different nationalities in their debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Never before in the history of the European Cup or Champions League had a team begun a match without repeating a single nationality.
The historic lineup included Pokatilov of Kazakhstan; Zedadka of Algeria; McCarthy of South Africa; Dashdamirov of Azerbaijan; Puchacz of Poland; Rakhmonaliev of Uzbekistan; Lepinjica of Croatia; Parris of Jamaica; Simic of Serbia; Nwachukwu of Nigeria; and Mickels of Rwanda. Although Arsenal once had eleven nationalities on the pitch in 2006, that occurred only after a substitution, making Sabah the first true pioneers from the opening whistle.
Their squad, boasting sixteen nationalities overall, has embraced such diversity throughout qualifying, and their record‑setting debut now stands as a defining chapter in the club’s rise.
