The Nerazzurri have had an odd couple of weeks; they have dropped three straight games across all competitions, trailing new Serie A leaders Napoli by three points. However, they managed to gain a 3-3 Champions League semi-final draw at Barcelona and were getting ready for the second leg on Tuesday.

There was a lot of squad rotation since Hakan Calhanoglu and coach Simone Inzaghi were suspended following plea deals in the inquiry into their alleged involvement with shady parts of the ultras organisations, while Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard were injured. With Diego Coppola and Daniele Ghilardi banned, Pawel Dawidowicz and Abdou Harroui out, and Casper Tengstedt back on the bench, Hellas had just suffered two straight losses. In the opening minutes, Nicolas Valentini rather foolishly moved his fist towards the ball after a Carlos Augusto run and pass, so the penalty was awarded following a VAR On-Field Review.
