Inter captain defended his team’s performance at the Bernabeu

Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martínez insisted his side did not deserve their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in their Champions League opener at the Bernabeu. Speaking to Movistar+, he said the match was decided by “two mistakes in the opening minutes,” which led to both Madrid goals. Lautaro argued Inter executed their game plan well and “did much more than Real Madrid,” despite leaving Spain empty‑handed.

He acknowledged the inherent risks of facing a top opponent, emphasising that Inter “paid dearly” for their errors but should take confidence from their overall display. Looking ahead, Lautaro highlighted Inter’s recent European pedigree, noting they have reached two finals in the last four years. He believes the team is improving steadily and must continue competing at the highest level to push Inter “as far as possible” in the tournament.

Despite the setback, Lautaro’s message was one of conviction, optimism and belief in Inter’s long‑term trajectory.
