Romelu Lukaku's penalty and Nicolò Barella's goal ended the match at Estadio da Luz, giving the home team a commanding lead going into the return match on April 19 at San Siro. Schmidt told Eleven Sports, "It was a difficult game and I think both teams had their opportunities, but sadly we did not take ours. "We continued to play, the guys gave everything they had, but then we let up a second due to a penalty. This is the game's narrative.

Even though Julian Draxler, Gonçalo Guedes, Alexander Bah, Nicolas Otamendi, and Alexander Bah were all out due to injury or suspension, just one substitute was made by Schmidt during the game. Since the beginning of the season, Benfica has gone undefeated in the Champions League, finishing first in their group ahead of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. They have scored in every game and have only drawn once both at home and away from PSG.
