Inter Miami boss emphasizes need to protect Messi ahead of World Cup

Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos has underlined the importance of managing Lionel Messi and the club’s other internationals carefully as the 2026 World Cup approaches. Speaking before Friday’s training session, the Argentine said that players heading to the tournament must be protected so they can perform at their peak for their national teams. With MLS pausing from 25 May to 16 July, Hoyos noted that the club are working to ensure their squad reaches the competition in optimal condition. Alongside Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, Germán Berterame and Dayne St. Clair are all strong World Cup candidates.

Hoyos’ remarks come ahead of Inter Miami’s trip to Toronto FC on Matchday 12, a chance to respond after last weekend’s dramatic 4‑3 collapse against Orlando City despite leading 3‑0. Miami sit third in the Eastern Conference with nineteen points, yet remain winless at their new Nu Stadium. Toronto, winless in five league matches, also urgently need points.
