The opening fifteen and last five minutes of Juventus' 2-1 triumph were marked by moments of intense drama. Valentin Carboni's equaliser in the 91st minute appeared to have preserved a draw for Monza, but Federico Gatti's goal three minutes later gave Juventus the victory. Georgios Kyriakopoulos tugged Federico Chiesa's shirt in the box nine minutes into the match, and the referee decided it was close enough for a penalty.
Following that, Dusan Vlahovic attempted a poor penalty, which Michele Di Gregorio saved low to his right. Vlahovic then sprang to his feet, flinging himself back across goal and managing to swipe the follow-up attempt away from his own net and behind for a corner. Rabiot took advantage of some careless marking as the corner came in to power an unstoppable header past the Monza goalie in the twelfth minute, an incredible double-save that must still be fresh in the thoughts of his teammates.
