LaLiga celebrated its 90th birthday

This Sunday has been the 90th anniversary of the first ever match in the Spanish top flight, held between Espanyol and Real Union Irùn on February 10, 1929.

Espanyol, the Copa del Rey champions at the time, won that fixture 3-2, while their city rivals Barcelona went on to claim that first league championship.

Over the following 89 years the title would be shared between the Catalan club and eight others - Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Real Betis and Deportivo La Coruna.

Real Madrid have won the most titles, with 33, followed by Barcelona's 25.

There have been so many great players in this Spanish league over the years, Messi is the top scorer by far with his ever-increasing tally of 403 goals.

Meanwhile, LaLiga is still growing and still improving and better and better for clubs, meaning there's a bright future ahead.
