After four straight losses in which they let up 11 goals and scored none, the Salentini were in serious trouble, but their 1-0 victory against leaders Napoli over the weekend at least showed some improvement. Despite his return from suspension, Antonino Gallo was still without Filip Marchwinski, Luis Hasa, Medon Berisha, and Kevin Bonifazi. Ondrej Duda was also reinstated for Verona after being banned, although Yllan Okou, Martin Frese, Pawel Dawidowicz, and Juan Manuel Cruz were not included. Lorenzo Montipò, the goalie, was benched, which was unexpected.

On the fifteenth minute, Kialonda Gaspar believed he had given Lecce the lead when his looping header on a free kick from Hamza Rafia crossed the goalie, but it struck the far post and rebounded back out. On a corner at 21 minutes, Patrick Dorgu did had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed due to his foul on Jackson Tchatchoua.
