Following the most easy of 1-0 triumphs over Union Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen has extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga, by 16 points. While Leverkusen did not play as excitingly as they have this season, they were in control of the game and had a chance to take the lead sooner but unfortunately, Alex Grimaldo wasted a wonderful opportunity following Nathan Tella's pull-back.
Union had a contested first half, but at injury time just before halftime, the game was all but done. After receiving a second yellow card for lunging into an unnecessary challenge on Tella close to the corner flag, Piero Hincapie's shot was deemed penalty-worthy after deflecting off Christopher Trimmel's arm. From the penalty spot, Florian Wirtz sent Frederik Ronnow reeling, establishing a lead that the 10-man opposition never truly challenged.
