Liverpool are heading for a contract crisis over Ibrahima Konate
06.09.25 / 12:00
Liverpool face a looming contract headache with Ibrahima Konate, whose deal expires in 2026. The 26-year-old France international has yet to agree fresh terms, raising fears he could leave on a free, with Real Madrid already linked. This uncertainty partly explains Liverpool’s determined but unsuccessful pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi before the summer window closed.
Palace stood firm, leaving the Reds light in defence and pushing sporting director Richard Hughes to reassess options. Guehi could still be targeted in January or next summer, though competition for his signature is expected to be fierce. Another potential recruit has now emerged in Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke. The 25-year-old recently partnered Virgil van Dijk in the Netherlands’ 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw against Poland, making him a player familiar to Liverpool’s Dutch core, including Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch.
