Liverpool ended Newcastle United's 17-match unbeaten run

Newcastle was taken off guard by Jürgen Klopp's team after a brilliant start, and the surprised visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 22nd minute when goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off. The sole league loss for fourth-placed Newcastle came at the hands of Liverpool at the end of August, and they found themselves in a similar situation when Nez finished off a long ball from Trent Alexander Arnold in the 10th minute.

When Nunez's arm appeared to have been struck as he handled the ball, VAR examined the goal and cleared it. Seven minutes later, Gakpo extended Liverpool's advantage by converting on a deft feed from Mohamed Salah. This was Gakpo's second goal of the week after opening the scoring against Everton. Newcastle had a strong response and was stopped by a combination of Alisson and the woodwork, but the damage had already been done.
