Mainz thrash Gladbach

Mainz are now ranked seventh, six points behind Eintracht Frankfurt, the top team in the Conference League zone, ahead of the weekend's games, which include a table-topper on Sunday between league leaders Bayern Munich and third-placed Union Berlin. Danny da Costa grabbed the ball from Nico Elvedi on the right and passed it to Jae-sung Lee, who finished it off with a header to break the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Early in the second half, Marcus Ingvartsen gave the home team a double advantage when Gladbach once again lost possession of the ball. Ludovic Ajorque then scored his first season goal for Mainz in the 72nd and Nelson Weiper struck a stoppage-time attempt to finish the scoring. Gladbach, ninth in the standings, has further worries in addition to the loss since goalkeeper Jonas Omlin had to be replaced after suffering an injury while attempting to stop Lee's header.
