With veteran Vincent Aboubakar unexpectedly dropped by new coach David Pagou, the scoring burden falls heavily on Bryan Mbeumo. The 26-year-old, who joined Manchester United from Brentford last July, must now revitalize an Indomitable Lions attack that recently failed to score in two decisive 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Following a goalless draw with Angola and a 1-0 playoff loss to DR Congo, Cameroon missed the World Cup, a bitter blow for a nation accustomed to legends like Samuel Eto'o.

Pagou omitted Aboubakar and Andre Onana to instill a "different mindset," appointing Mbeumo as captain for the upcoming AFCON Group F matches against Gabon, Ivory Coast, and Mozambique. Mbeumo, a French-born forward who switched allegiance to Cameroon, previously shone at Brentford alongside Yoane Wissa. Now, having already scored six vital goals for United this season, he must lift a demoralized squad that historically holds the African record for World Cup appearances.
