Since their Champions League elimination, the club's project has unravelled, reaching a point where even president Pablo Longoria will not continue in his current role.
Marseille perform a U-turn following intervention from owner Frank McCourt. On Tuesday, the historic French club released a statement confirming Mehdi Benatia's return to his sporting director duties, just two days after the Moroccan's own announcement.
"Aware of his responsibilities at the club, Mehdi Benatia has agreed to extend his contract until June and will oversee all sporting activities," the OM owner stated. "Under his supervision, we will soon announce the appointment of a new coach. My ambition for the club remains unchanged," he added.
Meanwhile, the club sidelines Spaniard Pablo Longoria, who has held full presidential powers since February 2021. "His role is expected to be limited to institutional responsibilities, maintaining Olympique Marseille's representation before French and, particularly, European governing bodies," the statement confirmed.
