Right after the last FIFA date when players around the world had to play with their respective national teams, FC Barcelona was arguably the most unstoppable team in the world. But then right after that period of time and a week before El Clasico, the team seemed to have lost the momentum and many players were quite tired of all the traveling. This came with consequences, they lost the more than 10 point-gap they had with Real Madrid and Atletico but fortunately for them the Copa del Rey final was already bagged.
At the final run of the championship, they recovered and won La Liga, but there are still many doubts on whether they will be able to defeat Sevilla next Sunday in the Copa del Rey final. French full-back Mathieu has no doubts that they will, he knows they were close to ending the seasons with no trophies at all, but at the end they managed to recover in time.
Talking to Mundo Deportivo, Mathieu said: "We had a s***** month due to that run of results, but the double is close. Of course the league is the most important title, it's the one where consistency counts. But [the Copa] is also an objective for the club. It's the final title that's left. The dressing-room wants the double."
"When you sign for Barca, it's to win everything. You cross the door to the dressing-room and you already know that the objective is to win the treble. The first year was fantastic. I don't know if there is an explanation [for the dip in form in April], but I don't think about looking for any excuse. What happened, happened. And we picked ourselves up. Maybe we were tired. We're not machines, we're human, it's normal."
After Sevilla won their third straight Europe League, Mathieu said: "I don't know if it's an advantage if they'll come to the final delighted and relaxed or competitive, but it's a final," Mathieu added. It doesn't matter how they approach it, we want to win it."
