'Mentally exhausted' Coutinho requests Vasco da Gama exit

Philippe Coutinho has publicly requested an immediate contract termination from Vasco da Gama, citing severe mental exhaustion. The 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder returned to his boyhood team in 2024, a return he called one of his most significant life choices. However, following increasing fan criticism and recent jeers, the former Liverpool star decided to conclude his tenure there.

Coutinho stated on social media that while his commitment never wavered, enduring unfair judgment regarding his character became overwhelmingly difficult. This sudden decision surprised the club, especially since renewal negotiations were reportedly active regarding his deal expiring in June. Despite manager Fernando Diniz recently calling him a "gift" and trying to deflect blame after the hostile reception, Coutinho insisted on stepping away right now. He played a key role in guiding Vasco to the 2025 Copa Brasil final against Corinthians, yet the veteran playmaker ultimately chose to prioritize his mental health over continuing.
