With seven points from four games, Napoli has temporarily climbed to fifth place in the rankings. The visiting champions were well-defended by Genoa, who made a successful comeback to Serie A after being demoted in 2021–22. Defender Mattia Bani gave Genoa the lead in the 40th minute by putting the ball in the back of the net after a corner. After the break, Mateo Retegui, an Italian attacker, gave the hosts a second goal with a first-time shot into the lower left corner.

The goal gave Napoli motivation, and six minutes from time, substitute Politano equalised with a close-range volley. preventing Genoa from picking up a second victory of the year.
