Judging on paper which team was the best throughout the season, one could argue that Atletico Madrid are the favorite team over Real Madrid to become this season's Champions League winners. During his visit to Milano as a pundit for English television, former United player Phil Neville wanted to completely back Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid to win the final.
He said: “They really are a horrible team to play against. Aggressive, nasty, just horrible – and everything you see in Diego Simeone you see in his team. It really is win at all costs for him and I think Simeone would shoot his grandma to win a football match - he is just that type” says Neville ahead of the game in Milan. I love watching them and I loved it when we played against them. They are just everything you’d want from a proper team – their pressing, that siege mentality.
“As a coach playing against them they are the ultimate test. They have togetherness, spirit, they’re organized and want to win at all costs. They are an incredible team. To beat Atletico you have to be prepared to go right to the very edge because that’s where they take you. Physically, mentally, discipline-wise. They push you to the limit and antagonize you. They get that from their manager because Simeone is a street footballer. He looks horrible! His number two as well German Burgos looks a scary guy. When his physical coach Oscar Ortega is warming the players up before the game he is in their faces. They just work the players so hard.”
