For the second time in less than a month, Newcastle United upset Manchester United thanks to a goal from Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. However, there was a cost to the win as goalie Nick Pope seemed to have a major damage to his shoulder. Kieran Trippier's low cross was tapped in at the far post by the in-form Gordon to give Newcastle a well-earned victory that lifted them above their rivals and put them within striking distance of the Premier League's top four. It happened thirty-one days after Eddie Howe's team won the Carabao Cup decisively, 3-0, at Old Trafford.
Before the half, Howe's already injury-ravaged team could have taken the lead as Harry Maguire diverted an attempt from Alexander Isak just wide and Trippier's exquisitely hit free-kick bounced to safety against the underside of the bar.
