López during his three seasons in La Provence had become a key part of the squad and a leader within the dressing room. He was thought to be a quiet but fair figure who was not afraid, to tell the truth to his managers and teammates.
Despite being one of the squad’s better performers during his time at Marseille, it had become apparent that a swift exit was approaching this summer. López had made it clear in a press conference ahead of the final game of last season that he was not expecting a new manager to be relying on him.
Marseille had spent much of the summer identifying a replacement for López and were finally able to bring in Gerónimo Rulli (32) and Jeffrey de Lange (26) last week, allowing for López to exit the club at least temporarily.
