Although it will be difficult, South Korea is now just one victory away from making a little contribution to their country's football history. South Korea will go to the quarterfinals at an away World Cup for the first time if they defeat top-ranked Brazil in the round of 16 on Monday.
South Korea is competing in its eleventh World Cup overall, but they have only previously advanced to the round of 16. Guus Hiddink of the Netherlands led South Korea, who co-hosted the tournament with Japan in 2002, all the way to the semifinals. Like they did on Friday in Qatar, they overcame Portugal in the final group game to advance. South Korea then defeated Italy and Spain, two of the biggest football teams in Europe, to secure a semifinal meeting with Germany.
