Panathinaikos beats Marseille

Panathinaikos prevailed against Olympique Marseille in the penalty shootout under pressure, securing their place in the Champions League playoffs. The match ended 2-1 after extra time (2-2 on the overall score), but the "Trifylli" prevailed 5-3 on penalties to keep their dreams of making the Champions League group stage very much alive.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for Marseille in the opening stanza as they controlled the most of the game. The attacker opened the score in the second minute by dribbling around goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli and putting the ball into an empty net. In the 45th and 1st seconds, he added another with a crisp finish from close range into the bottom right. Marseille believed they had the game's winning goal when substitute Vitinho scored in the 112th minute of extra time, but VAR again intervened and determined that there was an offside player involved in the play.
