Jose Mourinho was finally able to understand that Wayne Rooney's best spot as a veteran, is playing as a midfielder who can assist all his teammates and become the central part of United's game. This Thursday against Fenerbahce, the Portuguese manager rested Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and gave Rooney his chance to prove he can still be a top player as a midfielder. The risk was well-taken as Rooney became the most influential player for United, he even permitted Paul Pogba to play in a more advanced position and helped him score two goals.
This Manchester United looks a lot more like the team everybody is expecting, they started with a penalty awarded to them after Kjaer fouled Mata inside Fenerbahce's box. Rooney started playing his skipper role perfectly, as he let Pogba take the shot from the spot and United got the lead in the 30th minute. It took them just three minutes to get a new chance from the spot again, after Martial was taken down inside the box. This time, skipper Rooney granted Martial the ball and the youngster didn't disappoint. But the best was saved before the break.
Right before the half-time whistle, Pogba scored an absolute screamer which added to his early penalty. His shot was very much in the same vein as his best moments for Juventus, that Pogboom effect everybody was craving since he arrived. After the break, three minutes into the second half, another long-range shot came from Jesse Lingard after a great build-up which ended with Rooney playing it off for Lingard to crack a low drive into the corner. Not bad for this good day at Old Trafford.
Then after that goal came, United lowered the pace, they gave Fenerbahce a chance to pull one back. They did it through Manchester United favorite Robin Van Persie, who got a standing ovation from the whole stadium which he reciprocated. A beautiful image of a first-world country in a class act that will be news all around the world. United face Chelsea next weekend in an exciting match where Mourinho will face his former club.
