Ajaccio attempted to maintain possession and build on it throughout the first ten minutes, while PSG's strikers awaited an opening to attack. In the fourth minute, Mounaim El Idrissy missed a shot from a tight angle, giving Ajaccio their first opportunity of the game. Then, in the 13th minute, Ajaccio goalkeeper Benjamin Leroy stopped a deflected free-kick attempt from Lionel Messi.
A through pass from Argentina's Messi was intercepted by French striker Mbappe in the 24th minute, who then hoisted it over Leroy to give PSG the lead. The hosts were fortunate to enter halftime down just one goal as PSG had many opportunities to widen their lead.
